Belgian side KAA Gent have confirmed the signing of star 1. FC Heidenheim midfielder Niklas Dorsch.
The announcement confirms reports over the past couple of weeks that the 22-year-old was set to join the De Buffalo’s, who were second in the Jupiler Pro League before it was abandoned last season.
Dorsch, who came through the youth system at Bayern Munich, had become one of the 2. Bundesliga’s star players in his two seasons with Heidenheim, quickly becoming the linchpin of their midfield.
He made 62 league appearances for Frank Schmidt’s side but naturally attached the attention of sides like Hamburg and Celtic with his performances.
He will be a real miss for the club, who have also lost Sebastian Greisbeck from their midfield, with Dorsch’s regular partner in the centre of the park joining Union Berlin.
Gent’s sporting director Tim Matthys has said that he is “incredibly satisfied” to sign Dorsch. He believe he has played at “a very high level” with Heidenheim and is “a technically very skilled player,” who “combines this with a good dose of healthy aggressiveness against the ball.”
Dorsch has signed a four-year contract with Gent, with Transfermarkt estimating the transfer fee at €3.5 million.
