Baumgart took over in 2017 with the club on the brink of relegation to the Regionalliga, however after that fate was avoided (due to 1860 Munich’s double relegation), he then guided them to back-to-back promotions to the Bundesliga.
The campaign in the Bundesliga was tough with the league’s smallest budget, and they ultimately finished bottom having achieved just four wins. There were some memorable moments however, with victories away at Werder Bremen and SC Freiburg plus a 3-3 draw at Borussia Dortmund when they had been leading 3-0.
Following a review of the season though, it was agreed that Baumgart should fulfil the remaining year of his contract.
He admitted that the relegation had “personally hurt me a lot,” but “there was no question that I wanted to fulfil my contract.”
He said he is “really looking forward” to rebuilding the team over the summer, and fans of both the club and the 2. Liga will be hoping the results are similar to the swashbuckling team that won promotion in the 2018-19 season.
