Fortuna Düsseldorf return to the 2. Bundesliga

Fortuna Düsseldorf have been relegated to the 2. Bundesliga after an incredible final day in the Bundesliga.

SV Werder Bremen started the day below them in 17th but put in a staggering performance to beat 1. FC Köln 6-1 at the Weserstadion.

Düsseldorf therefore had to beat 1. FC Union Berlin but they lost 3-0, with Anthony Ujah (once of Bremen), Christian Gentner and Suleiman Abdullahi putting the nails in the coffin for Uwe Rösler’s side.

It has been a tough second season in the top flight for Düsseldorf, with Rösler replacing Friedhelm Funkel in January. The defeat on Saturday was just their fourth since then however only one win since the restart (against Schalke) was not enough in comparison to their rivals.

A rebuilding job awaits and they join Paderborn back in the second tier next season.

Bremen into play-off

Milot Rashica, likely to leave Bremen in the summer, influenced a superb attacking display form his side in their game against Köln, whilst Yuya Osako scored twice. Niclas Füllkrug, Davy Klaassen and Josh Sargent also scored against a hapless Effzeh side.

Bremen will now go in to the play-off against the side finishing third in the 2. Bundesliga, which will be either 1. FC Heidenheim, who they knocked out of the DFB-Pokal earlier in the season, or fiercest rivals Hamburger SV. The first leg is on Thursday, with the second following four days later.
