Holstein Kiel have confirmed the signing of SV Meppen centre-back Marco Komenda.
The 23-year-old is the second defender to sign for the club this week, following the confirmation that Simon Lorenz will join from VfL Bochum when his contract there expires next week.
Komenda, who previously played for Darmstadt (up to U19 level) and Borussia Mönchengladbach II, has made a strong impression with Meppen in the 3. Liga and had also attracted reported interest from Heidenheim and former club Darmstadt.
Uwe Stöver said Komenda had “drawn attention to himself with very good performances,” and praised his positional and aerial ability. He also noted that his ability to play at left-bakc, as well as in his primary role in the centre of defence, would be useful.
Komenda said he had been keen to move up a level and chose Kiel “because the philosophy and the way in which football in played here suits me very well.”
Both Komenda and Lorenz will provide competition for skipper Hauke Wahl and Stefan Thesker next season, especially with Dominik Schmidt leaving the club following their game against 1. FC Nürnberg on Sunday.
